Clay Style:Duan Clay (Duan Ni) (段泥)
  • Origin:

    Duan Clay is  one of the three major types of clay in Yixing Zisha pottery clay. Duanni is also known as "tuan ni".

    Duan Clay is a general term for a type of mud that is yellowish and light in color after firing by modern people, and it does not refer to a single specific mud. No matter it is raw ore or fired works, the overall color of Duan mud ore is light yellow, simple and elegant, such as clear water hibiscus, Lingbo fairy, pure heart and pleasant fragrance, known as "plain heart and plain noodles".

  • Classification:

    Judging from the appearance and performance of the mud, there are roughly two types of Duan Clay: one is the Duan Clay of white mud, and the other is the Duan Clay of symbiotic minerals;

    From the appearance characteristics of the raw ore mud, there are green mud, sesame duan mud and white pockmark mud, etc.; from the appearance and color of pottery products, there are golden mud, beige duan mud, green duan mud and Aged Duan Mud, etc., and the bkackish green mud made by "potters' ingenuity" etc., also attributed to Duan Ni.

  • Duan Ni's works are more difficult to burn. If the burn is not in place, it is easy to "vomit black" and "startle". Generally, the raw ore Duan mud should be burnt out to the color of the original ore, and then burned back. The phenomenon of "vomiting black" is caused by the purple mud particles in the Duan mud. The content of potassium oxide and sodium oxide in segment mud is relatively low, and the fluxing ability is relatively weak, so the degree of sintering is not high, the degree of vitrification is relatively low, the color is dry and astringent, the color of water is not bright, and the soaking effect is not as good as purple mud and red clay. The effect of mud products is obvious.
